Bird Watching. The strange sounds that come from the thick, 98% over-story canopy of the rainforest are unlike the bird sounds anywhere except in tropical jungles. The thick jungle conceals many strange varieties of birds that have never seen humans and thus have absolutely no fear of human presence. It is wonderful to walk through the jungle and have birds fly up to you within reach to get a close look at what sort of moving plant you are or to pet the stomach of a bird, as we have. Eagles and condors frequently glide in low circles barely above the beach. We have five very large eagles nested on our beach. Taking advantage of the airflow from our waterfall, they solemnly glide effortlessly with their wings fully extended making only minor adjustments of the single feather at the tip of their wings for balance. These are ideal conditions for bird watchers.

Dolphins. The large number of rivers on the island running into the surrounding fjord cause the perfect mixture of fresh and salt water called "sweet water conditions" that are ideal for whales, dolphins, seals and surprisingly warm water penguins. The dolphins here have not been killed off in fishermen's nets as they have in the Northern Hemisphere, and are so abundant that groups of dolphins regularly encircle the boat to and from the island leaping in the air within arms reach of the boat. This entertaining acrobatic show of dolphins is steeped in myths of fishermen saved by dolphins. There are three varieties of dolphins in our waters including a beautiful blue dolphin that is very rare elsewhere in the world but is plentiful here.

Dolphins in groups of 3 to 7 usually perform acrobatic shows on every boat ride to and from the island.

Whale, Seal and Penguin Watchers. Chileans claim these waters are the best in the world for whales. Hundreds of huge sea lions and seals beach on the rocks directly across the fjord from our property. Seals constantly swim back and forth in front of the waterfall catching fish. Imagine the surprise to see, at a latitude equivalent to Eugene, Oregon, or Nice, France, Humboldt penguins in groups as large as 100! Which is very far from their stereotypical Antarctica, but a common site near our island.

Hundreds of Sea Lions bask in the warm sun on rocky oceanside ledges.
